-We will meet at 8:45 a.m. in the main lounge of the ACC Clubhouse in Canmore.
-If you're driving in from Calgary or elsewhere, please ensure you give yourself adequate time to arrive at the clubhouse, ready your gear, and be prepared to begin hiking by 8:45 a.m.
-The hike will begin at 9:00 a.m.
-I have allocated 8 hours for the hike, which will be adequate for completion at a moderate pace and return to the clubhouse for the start of the Rocky Mountain Section's annual BBQ, which begins at 5:00 p.m.
-We're planning to do the loop variation of this route, in a counter-clockwise direction. If conditions are particularly wet/soggy, I may alter this to take the west ridge for both ascent & descent, but I do not expect this to be necessary.
Required Items to Bring:
-Comfortable footwear for scrambling (hiking boots, hiking shoes, or trail runners, depending on your preference)
-Comfortable, layered clothing for warmth and comfort in variable weather conditions (pack a wind/rain resistant jacket and pants)
-Food and water to keep you comfortable for ~8 hours of strenuous hiking (recommend 2-4 L water, per person)
-Desired additional clothing items (hats, extra socks, gloves, etc.)
-Any medications or personal items you desire or need, based on your own situation (think: inhalers, medications, allergy medications, etc.)
-Small daypack to carry your clothing layers, food and water, etc.
-Sun screen, sunglasses
-*Moleskin or other blister protection equipment*
-Hiking poles, if desired
-Helmet, if desired
-Bear spray, if desired
Recommended Items to Bring:
-I have specifically designed this trip to occur at a moderate, comfortable pace, to make it friendly and accessible for a wider segment of our membership, while also not starting TOO early, for folks who are coming in from out of town to attend this and the BBQ. This is not a race to the summit.
-With that being said, this is still a Rockies scramble, and will involve 8 hours of hiking on variable, steep terrain, including dirt, mud, rock, and scree. You may need to use your hands, in sections, and areas will be steep and muddy.
-The route (round-trip) is just over 12 km, with ~1,450m of elevation gain and loss.
-Please do your own research on the route to ensure that you and your fellow attendees will be comfortable and enjoy your time on this scramble!
-I have no issues with people bringing children or dogs. Feel free to do so. Keep in mind that the same criteria applies: ensure that anyone or anything you bring will be comfortable on the terrain and with the length of the hike (8 hours). Please note that attendees under the age of majority (18) will require a parent/guardian to sign the ACC's liability waiver.
-I have no issue bringing a large group on this hike! Rockfall hazard on this route is very limited, and I expect this will be popular, as I've scheduled it before the section BBQ. The more, the merrier! I've initially limited registration to 20 attendees (so register now!), but if more people want to come, I'll add another trip leader to help manage the group, if necessary.
-There is no cost for this event.
How to Get There:
Event Directions:
We’re located a comfortable 4.5 km from downtown Canmore on the sunny south bench overlooking the Bow Valley – far enough away to be completely quiet and close enough to take advantage of all the amenities of town.
Notes:
-If you wish to attend this event, please register now! That allows me to send reminder e-mails to the group before the event, and get a better feel for numbers.
-If you want to bring guests (spouses, family members, friends, etc.) who are NOT members of the ACC or the Rocky Mountain Section, it may be possible. Reach out to me with an e-mail or text message, and I'll do my best to accommadate you and your guest(s).
-Look forward to seeing you on June 4th for this hike and for the BBQ!
-I will be bringing a camera to capture images/video of this section event. Please feel free to do the same, if you wish. I will share that media with trip attendees!
-If you have any questions, please feel free to reach out to me directly.
-My personal e-mail is ckatunar@gmail.com
-Cancellation is no big deal. Please do your best to show up, but if something comes up, it's all good.
-This trip will go ahead and be largely unaffected by numbers, regardless of whether there are four, or 25 attendees.
Cancellation Policy If a participant is unable to attend a paid course or trip, there will be no refund unless the participant finds a suitable replacement that is acceptable to the trip coordinator. Acceptable waiting list candidates will have priority. It will then be the participant's responsibility to recover funds from the replacement. If the coordinator cancels an event, participants get a refund (less any non-recoverable costs). Note that ACC National does not refund hut fees due to weather, delay, closures, or any other reasons. The Rocky Mountain Section of the ACC is a not for profit club and we only charge attendees what it costs us to provide courses or trips.
