The AST 2 is a four-day course that focuses on decision-making. Online you will review some avalanche basics and snow science with MTN guide Dr. Snowflake, Scotty Thumlert. Then you spend 4 days planning trips, travelling through the backcountry, making decisions, and managing risk (Kananaskis/ Banff). This is where you begin to learn how to navigate terrain and minimize avalanche risk.
The AST 1 is the minimum prerequisite. For this course, we're looking for people with backcountry skiing/riding experience who are looking to work towards bigger terrain.

Partial attendance is not possible. Please note that these courses are not run on a 'for profit' scheme and require full attendance to run. If we have to cancel due to lack of registration, it will be at least a month in advance to give the guides some opportunity to book someone or something else. That works the best for the guide, as they appreciate the time to find something else and will consider working with us in the future and for the club, as we are not left in a financially compromising position. Don't sit on your hands expecting you can register at the last minute.
Cancellation Policy If a participant is unable to attend a paid course or trip, there will be no refund unless the participant finds a suitable replacement that is acceptable to the trip coordinator. Acceptable waiting list candidates will have priority. It will then be the participant's responsibility to recover funds from the replacement. If the coordinator cancels an event, participants get a refund (less any non-recoverable costs). Note that ACC National does not refund hut fees due to weather, delay, closures, or any other reasons. The Rocky Mountain Section of the ACC is a not for profit club and we only charge attendees what it costs us to provide courses or trips.
