Geoff Powter is an experienced climber, writer and adventurer from Canmore. He served as editor of the Canadian Alpine Journal for 13 years and has won 13 National Magazine Awards. Powter has authored several books.

The questions of why a climber pursues the life he or she does, or how a climber makes that life work, are always more interesting than what a climber climbs, and Geoff Powter’s exploration of the climbing life of American climber Jim Donini, in his new book, Survival is not Assured, offers a masterful look at the joys, complexities and challenges of the choices of adventure. Donini has long been at the forefront of extreme alpinism, putting benchmark climbs up around the world for decades, but the shadows of his life back in the valleys — especially in his family — have been as tragic as any get, and this multi award-nominated book takes a clear-eyed look at both halves of this climber’s story.

Join Geoff — former Editor of the CAJ, award-winning author of Strange and Dangerous Dreams and Inner Ranges — for an intimate exploration of the story behind the book, and what it took to tell it.

If a participant is unable to attend a paid course or trip, there will be no refund unless the participant finds a suitable replacement that is acceptable to the trip coordinator. Acceptable waiting list candidates will have priority. It will then be the participant's responsibility to recover funds from the replacement. If the coordinator cancels an event, participants get a refund (less any non-recoverable costs). Note that ACC National does not refund hut fees due to weather, delay, closures, or any other reasons. The Rocky Mountain Section of the ACC is a not for profit club and we only charge attendees what it costs us to provide courses or trips.
