Itinerary:

This hybrid classroom/outdoors course will show participants useful skills in planning routes with GaiaGPS and navigating with GaiaGPS. We will also look at useful skills with Garmin Inreach devices and associated software.


Topics will include:

Gaia
Using different layers and overlays
Creating routes (computer and phone)
How to download maps
Exporting and importing gpx files
Going directly to a point on the Gaia map
Entering coordinates and going directly to that point
Gaia to paper map and paper map to Gaia, what should you consider?
Gaia bearing to compass, how do you handle magnetic North?
Switching between magnetic and true North.
How to quickly find your Gaia location and give that location to a different party (e.g. rescue)
How to switch between UTM and Lat Long.
How to get a Gaia track on to your Garmin device

Inreach and Garmin Messenger
Sending messages on an Inreach and on a bluetooth connected device 
Getting weather
Receiving messages, what is your Inreach contact number/email?
Changing the tracking options on an inreach
What is a check in message, how do they work?
What is a quick text message, how do they work?

General
How to make the phone battery last longer
Pros and cons of different emergency devices

Paper map of Banff area, ideally GEMTrek

Garmin watch 


Notes:

The course is free for active trip leaders who have led 3 trips in the past 12 months or led 1 camp. There are 6 free trip leader places.

The price is $35 for non-trip leaders.




Cancellation Policy
If a participant is unable to attend a paid course or trip, there will be no refund unless the participant finds a suitable replacement that is acceptable to the trip coordinator. Acceptable waiting list candidates will have priority. It will then be the participant's responsibility to recover funds from the replacement. If the coordinator cancels an event, participants get a refund (less any non-recoverable costs). Note that ACC National does not refund hut fees due to weather, delay, closures, or any other reasons. The Rocky Mountain Section of the ACC is a not for profit club and we only charge attendees what it costs us to provide courses or trips.
