Itinerary:

Start your backcountry and avalanche safety training here! Learn how avalanches form and how to manage the risks.

This Avalanche Canada course teaches the basics of safe backcountry travel.

This is a hybrid AST 1/AST1+ course with two days in the mountains.

We are now offering the AST 1 classroom online. Students can learn at their own pace with instructor feedback and a 2-hour Zoom discussion before field days.

Your field day(s) take you into the hills near Lake Louise to practice rescue and study the snow and terrain first hand. Early season ASTs allow you to develop the skills and apply them all season long!

The second field day goes into more depth about terrain management and participants also earn their Managing Avalanche Terrain certificate from Avalanche Canada.

Additional guides will be added if the group size exceeds 8 people.

Required Items to Bring:

The guides will send a gear list ahead of time.

Notes:

The price is $420 for members or $250 for active trip leaders. Payment is by Interac E-transfer only.

To qualify as an active trip leader you must have led 3 trips or 1 camp in the last 12 months, prior to registering for the course.

Cancellation Policy
If a participant is unable to attend a paid course or trip, there will be no refund unless the participant finds a suitable replacement that is acceptable to the trip coordinator. Acceptable waiting list candidates will have priority. It will then be the participant's responsibility to recover funds from the replacement. If the coordinator cancels an event, participants get a refund (less any non-recoverable costs). Note that ACC National does not refund hut fees due to weather, delay, closures, or any other reasons. The Rocky Mountain Section of the ACC is a not for profit club and we only charge attendees what it costs us to provide courses or trips.
