This is crossposted from Edmonton section.  It's my anniversary so I will not be attending.  Email Greg at hartmanmd@gmail.com.  This trail maintenance task involves installing route markers (poles) between Tuff Puff ridge and Kinglet Lake. Route marking will reduce trail braiding and improve safety (reduced chance of getting off-route). We will meet AB Lands representative at 10AM and ferry poles to the work site (6 km hike via Kinglet Lake or 8 km hike via Tuff Puff ridge). Then install poles at AB Lands direction.

Required Items to Bring:

Hiking boots, clothes for a full range of potential weather conditions from heat to snow (September is unpredictable), work gloves, eye protection (sunglasses OK), camping equipment (see additional notes below), food, pots, stove, etc., drinking water, whistle, personal first aid kit


Recommended Items to Bring:

FRS radio, satellite communicator or satellite capable phone, electronics chargers, bear spray, water filter, GPS or phone with mapping app (e.g., Avenza, Gaia, Backcountry Navigator; please download georeferenced map at this link: open.alberta.ca , climbing helmet or hard hat for potential rockfall hazard


Notes:

This is more a more advanced trail maintenance activity than we have attempted in the past. The trail is moderate length (6-8 km one way - depending on route), but steep. It is very possible to camp at Kinglet Lake, but carrying the poles and installation tools up the trail makes me think that the best plan is to car camp at 2 O'clock Creek and day hike in and out of the work area. As such, I have booked site #3 there for Friday (19th) and Saturday (20th) nights. If you also choose to camp there, many sites are available (as of Aug 15th) and the cost per night is $34 all-in for a non-serviced site. Many rustic camping sites are available near the trailhead such as Wildhorse and Preacher's Point. Camping in these areas, or at Kinglet Lake itself (backpacking access) requires an Alberta random camping pass that can be purchased at  albertarelm.com . The cost for random camping is per-person at $20 for three days and $30 for the year. Children and First Nations are exempt. Our meet-up time at the trailhead on Saturday morning is 10AM to accommodate persons who may travel to the trailhead from Edmonton that morning (3:45 hour drive). However, if you choose to camp on Friday night and want to hang out, please find me at the campground, or call me on FRS 5.10 (I'll have my radio on as there is no cell service). Children are welcome, but it may be a tough hike, and lots of sitting around for younger kids if they aren't able to participate in route marking. Leashed dogs are welcome. There may be some rockfall hazard on the route below Tuff Puff ridge depending on how steep it is in places. I have marked the trailhead, Two O'clock campground, and the approximate location of the route to be marked in red on the attached image. Please contact me if you require more information.



Event Directions: 

Kinglet Lake staging area is 65.5 km west of the Nordegg turnoff and 2 min further SW along Highway 11 from Two O'Clock Creek group campsite (52.028147, -116.428556). 


Cancellation Policy
If a participant is unable to attend a paid course or trip, there will be no refund unless the participant finds a suitable replacement that is acceptable to the trip coordinator. Acceptable waiting list candidates will have priority. It will then be the participant's responsibility to recover funds from the replacement. If the coordinator cancels an event, participants get a refund (less any non-recoverable costs). Note that ACC National does not refund hut fees due to weather, delay, closures, or any other reasons. The Rocky Mountain Section of the ACC is a not for profit club and we only charge attendees what it costs us to provide courses or trips.
