He has worked for Parks Canada across its iconic mountain parks and currently helps lead the Mountain Safety program in Glacier National Park — Rogers Pass. He has been apart of many rescues throughout Canada’s National Parks and with the local Search and Rescue group in Golden BC and has participated in Avalanche awareness and education throughout his career.
An accomplished multi-sport athlete, Mark has undertaken a variety of high-level mountain pursuits, including ski mountaineering, rock and ice climbing, trail running, white water kayaking, mountain biking and paragliding.
In late September 2024, Mark was involved in a paragliding crash that resulted in a broken wrist and the eventual amputation of his left leg below the knee. His recovery has been a testament to resilience and determination, involving extensive rehabilitation and adaptation to his new reality. His journey so far has provided a valuable display of dedication, trauma recovery and the power of a positive yet realistic mindset.
During his presentation he tells his story, talks about his crash and his immediate acceptance of his circumstances as he prepares for the toughest challenge of his life.
