Itinerary:

Let's go ice climbing! This trip is open to anyone who enjoys ice climbing and can offer a good belay.  Beginners should have climbed at least once before, and know how to put their crampons on, but don't have to be good climbers.  An early start will ensure we get our choice of lines, though we'll be friendly and share the space with others.  We'll set some topropes up quickly to get people moving, and then if anyone wants to lead we can do that in a fun & low pressure environment.  Bear Spirit has lines from WI 2+ to WI4, and even a few mixed lines if that's your thing.

The crag is about an hour's walk (flat for the first 75%, then uphill at the end) from the parking lot at the turnoff to the 1A.

Required Items to Bring:
  • Ice Climbing Gear (Helmet, harness, crampons, ice tools, belay device)
  • Warm Clothing (Including more gloves than seems reasonable)
  • Snacks/Drinks
  • Stoke

If you have any questions about what is needed for a day of ice cragging, please let me know.

Recommended Items to Bring:

Microspikes will make the approach much easier.

If we end up as a team of 4 it would be nice if someone could bring a rope with good dry treatment.

How to Get There:
Carpool Departure Time:   07:00 AM
Carpool Location:   Parking lot just off the 1A turnoff from TransCanada Hwy

Notes:

If we haven't climbed together before, please send me a message with your ice climbing and belaying experience.  Anyone who has ice climbed at least once before is welcome.  Being a good belayer is more important than being a good climber on this trip!  (Good climbers are also welcome)

HAZARDS

Ice climbing is hazardous: falling rocks/ice/gear, contact with sharp/hard surfaces, slips/trips/falls, climber/belayer errors, open water, other people. Ice always falls when ice climbing; sometimes the pieces are very big.

The approach to this climb includes crossing an avi path.  It has slid this year already, but we'll still take note of it and spread out when crossing.

To mitigate the primary risk of icefall, belayers will be tied in at the bottom whenever pracatical to keep them clear from falling ice and avoid them getting pulled in case of a fall. Regardless, helmets must be worn at all times.

A NOTE ON TRIP LEADING

This is a recreational trip lead by amateur leaders and not acting in the role of guides.

If the forecasted temperature is below -16C, we'll either move to a warmer location (if possible) or cancel.

If you decide to cancel or have to bail for whatever reason let me know before 6:00am. That way we're not waiting for you at the parking lot. Anyone who no shows and does not unregister themselves or notify me of their change in plans by 6:00am will be marked as “no show.”
