Eastern Europe - Climbs, Caves and Castles Thursday, June 11, 7pm Arrive early to meet mountain friends over a bite and beverage. Location to be confirmed. So, for argument sake let's just suppose that you're not keen to climb in the USA this spring or fall. Where should you go for your next sport climbing vacation? You can definitely join the hoards in Kalymnos or get a quick flight to Monterrey and check out El Potrero Chico. Thailand is awesome if you can handle the humidity. But what about Eastern Europe? Join Steve Fedyna on an exploration of some undiscovered gems. There is a ton of climbing in Slovenia, Croatia, Bulgaria and Romania. This part of the world is a crossroads of historical cultures and religions with a lot of interesting steep terrain and plenty of folks with battery operated impact drills. Steve will consider cost, convenience, culture, crowds, cuisine and climbing. Is there anything to do on your rest days? Is it easy to get around? Can you find beta? Will you have to put up with pushy Brits or the snobby French? Do the locals play nice? And how good are the caves and castles? At the end, Steve will give you his impression on how each of these countries compare to the well worn path to Kalymnos, El Potrero and Krabi / Railay Bay. Steve Fedyna is the past treasurer of the Calgary Section and the past Chair of the Rocky Mountain Section. He is currently a member of the ACC National Safety Committee and is the Canadian representative on the UIAA International Safety Commission and the UIAA Bolting and Rebolting committees. He is the president of TABVAR, the Association of Bow Valley Area Rock Climbers. He has visited 91 countries and climbed in 28 of them, but never very well in any of them.
