In partnership with the ACC national Summit Shaker, the ACC RMS will be leading an open trip to Grizzly Peak. For those inclined to look at a difficult scramble from the col instead of Grizzly Peak, you can sign up for this trip. We will split from the main group to attempt Mount Evan-Thomas. Mount Evan-Thomas (3097m) is the highest point in the Opal Range. It is situated in the Kananaskis River Valley and east of Highway 40 in Peter Lougheed Provincial Park. Via the Kane route (3rd edition, 4th edition), we will find some great hands-on scrambling with plenty of routefinding challenges on Evan-Thomas's west ridge. Alan Kane's book Scrambles in the Canadian Rockies is the quintessential guide to non technical routes. The 4th edition hit the shelves earlier this year (Grizzly Peak is in it too).
Required Items to Bring:
A helmet is mandatory. Hiking poles, food, water...The trip is not first come first served so you will be vetted for scrambling experience. Have you done any difficult scrambles with 1500m of elevation gain before?
How to Get There:
Event Directions:
Carpool Departure Time:
06:20 AM
Carpool Location:
Canmore, likely the closed visitor's centre/toilets
Notes:
Please note that this is not the sign up for the trip up Grizzly Peak though we will share the trail with the group to the col.
Weather and previous conditions can and will change the nature of this trip. It may be cancelled altogether. Typically, however, the Opal Range dries off earlier than other areas in the Canadian Rockies.
Cancellation Policy If a participant is unable to attend a paid course or trip, there will be no refund unless the participant finds a suitable replacement that is acceptable to the trip coordinator. Acceptable waiting list candidates will have priority. It will then be the participant's responsibility to recover funds from the replacement. If the coordinator cancels an event, participants get a refund (less any non-recoverable costs). Note that ACC National does not refund hut fees due to weather, delay, closures, or any other reasons. The Rocky Mountain Section of the ACC is a not for profit club and we only charge attendees what it costs us to provide courses or trips.
