ACMG Christian Schlumph is working with Biologist Rachel Darvill to help save the Black Swift bird.
Black Swifts are a migratory bird that spends summers in western Canada, breeding mostly in British Columbia. They rely on very specialized nesting habitat - waterfalls, canyons, and moist cliffs - many of which are located in alpine environments. Due to a sharp decline in their numbers over the past few decades, they were federally listed as an Endangered species in 2019.
With increasing numbers of people recreating in the mountains, the risk of impacting vulnerable Black Swift nesting habitat is rising. Canyoneering, Ice climbing, Rock climbing, and Via Ferrata all occur in places that could have an impact. As these activities become more popular, how can our community be stewards of sensitive cliff, canyon, and waterfall ecosystems?
Christian Schlumpf is an ACMG Mountain Guide and environmental advocate living in Golden BC. Through the support of the ACC Environment Grant, he has been working to expand our knowledge of Black Swifts in southeastern BC in partnership with Goldeneye Ecological Services & Environment and Climate Change Canada. He will educate the audience on this fascinating bird species, share pictures and stories from his work, and host a discussion on best practices for mountain recreationists.

Everyone is responsible for their own food and beverage. Can purchase from The Mineshaft Tavern and consume in the Presentation room.
Cancellation Policy If a participant is unable to attend a paid course or trip, there will be no refund unless the participant finds a suitable replacement that is acceptable to the trip coordinator. Acceptable waiting list candidates will have priority. It will then be the participant's responsibility to recover funds from the replacement. If the coordinator cancels an event, participants get a refund (less any non-recoverable costs). Note that ACC National does not refund hut fees due to weather, delay, closures, or any other reasons. The Rocky Mountain Section of the ACC is a not for profit club and we only charge attendees what it costs us to provide courses or trips.
Waiver Requirement
Participation in this activity is subject to the participant having signed the
ACC Release of Liability, Waiver of Claims, Assumption of Risks Agreement (the “Waiver”). The Waiver is a legal document in which you waive or give up the right to sue or claim compensation following an accident. PLEASE READ IT CAREFULLY!
Members participating in this activity do not require a separate Waiver.
Your membership Waiver in place at the time of the activity will apply to your participation in this activity. If your membership renews prior to the activity taking place, you will be required to agree to a new Waiver upon renewal, this new Waiver
