Ski mountaineering course alert
Based out of the Balfour Hut, this intensive, 3-day course will get you skiing one of the Rockies' greatest peaks. The long, warm spring days and deep, well-settled snowpack of early April will present the registrant with multiple days of instruction from Alpine Air Adventures guide Jeff Bullock. Zoom meeting pre course for a couple hrs to get logistics and group details sorted. Day 1: Meet and sign waivers, ski to Balfour Hut, along the way, the group will spend some time discussing overall objectives and past experience. Up to an hour of companion rescue review, assess conditions and gather snowpack information. An evening session debriefing conditions and group dynamics in preparation for following days objective and route. Day 2: Aiming for Mount Balfour via complex terrain (e.g., Mt Athabasca). Assessing conditions during group meeting and onsight observations, snowpack data and changing wx observations while managing the group. An evening session debriefing conditions and group dynamics. Day 3: Ski out, which way will be determined by weather and group discussion and dynamics. Prerequisites: - minimum AST 1 in the last 3 years (AST 2 recommended)
- rope rescue is an asset and should be seriously considered
- 15 min real touring days this season with intermediate to strong downhill skills
- any other mountaineering skills are an asset
